As more and more people are turning to in-home care as they age, we look into the benefits of modern day live-in care, how it can help and how it can be funded. Helps Restore Independence There is often a stigma around the idea that live-in home care services, involves someone coming in to take over, however this couldn’t be more wrong. In fact in-home care is provided to help restore independence not take it away. By having some help with day to day tasks, allows an individual the chance to get things sorted without the need of getting their friends and family involved. In some scenarios it’s not necessarily a chronic disease that requires in –home care, maybe it is a recovering patient after a recent hospitalisation. Depending on what specific care an individual needs, in home care will help you to regain the independence you may have lost. Flexibility Hourly home care services can provide a range of flexibility. From the average minimum of four hours of care a week, most care providers will be flexible to times when an individual in need requires them the most. Perhaps that person in need only requires someone to stop in a couple of hours a day every day, or maybe more assistance is required for more hands on care. Either way the amount of care provided can be tailored to each person uniquely. Payment Options This is a huge factor when considering in-home care, as we all know nothing comes for free, and home care as we know it can be really expensive. Some families may be lucky enough that they have the money to be able to fund the care for a loved one, but not everyone is in that position, so what are the options? Well there are certain areas where care is government funded, otherwise known as “entitlement programs”. This is where a particular amount or percentage of home care is paid for. Veteran’s Affairs can also be another possible option but it’s advised that you speak with a VA representative to see if you are eligible, before applying. Long-term care insurance Unlike regular health insurance plans, long-term care insurance helps to cover a wide range of services that you wouldn’t find on a regular plan. This extends to services like light cleaning, helping an individual in and out of bed, and of course bathing. This type of insurance is designed to help cover the cost of care for those who have chronic conditions, illnesses or a disability, the most common being Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. There are many policies that will repay for care received for those who need an assisted living facility, a nursing home, or need care within their own home. With long term care insurance it’s exactly the same as taking out a policy for any other type of insurance, so you simply choose a plan that best fits you. It’s important to note that 45% of applicants that are aged 70 years old and above, have had their applications denied compared to 18% of those denied at the age of 55 years and younger. Meaning the older you are the harder it is to take out long-term care insurance. If you are someone looking at in-home care for a family member, friend or even yourself, hopefully this has given you a better insight to some of the more important benefits when it comes to in-home care.
