An argumentative essay is one where you introduce a theme or topic, and then argue that topic through to a conclusion within the essay. It is about presenting two sides of an argument to see which is stronger. Learning how to write argumentative essays is very important because it shows your professors and other scholars that you can approach a topic in an unbiased manner. It only took the submission of a few good argumentative essays to convince my teachers and professors that I was an A grade student. If you are looking to improve your standing at your school or college, then here is how you write a very good argumentative essay. Argumentative Essay OutlineYour outline is essential when it comes to being able to write your essay. Many people may write other other forms and styles and be lucky enough to work without an outline, but if you try to write an argumentative essay without an outline, then your essay will be sloppy, undisciplined and hard to follow. A good argumentative essay requires that you take two or more standpoints. Those standpoints need to be clearly defined, and without an outline it is almost impossible to do this correctly. Creating your argumentative essay outline first is going to help you to structure your essay, and the structure is what will stop your essay becoming a narrative. It will help you to clearly make statements on the behalf on one argument, and then help you to clearly make statements on behalf of the opposing argument. Any loss of clarity because you did not create an outline is going to severely affect the quality of your argumentative essay. Argumentative Essay FormatWith all argumentative essays for college and high school , you must start with an introduction. The introduction is one of the most important aspects because the rest of the essay will make no sense without it, so you need to make sure your introduction is well crafted. Start by telling the reader what you are arguing, why they should read it, and then introduce the argument to them. You then need to introduce a thesis statement, which is where you can take a position (for or against). The thesis will guide the rest of the paper. Further paragraphs will start with an argument, followed by supporting evidence and supporting paragraphs. The next paragraph may make a different point that contradicts the first, or it may make a different point complete that relates to the thesis. Finally you must end your essay. You can do this with a conclusion, or you can declare that your thesis remains neither proven nor unproven, and show that you have given as many arguments as possible within the boundaries of your essay. Some people will slowly conclude through the body paragraphs of their argumentative essay, to the point where the argument simply exhausts itself and the reader is left with his or her own conclusion. Argumentative Essay TopicsMany people will choose current issues as topics for argumentative essays. If however you are applying to college for a history or religious studies degree, you should consider creating a backlog of argumentative essays on those topics. Both are rich areas for argumentative essay topics, and listing your most popular essays and their titles will help to sway the application staff. Obviously, if you are writing a scholarship essay, you should probably steer clear of an argumentative essay, but a track record of well produced argumentative essays is going to show the admin staff that you are not just a learner, but that you are a thinker too. Choosing the right topic for your argumentative essay is more about finding a topic that interests your target reader. Arguing about if watching paint dry is fun is not going to interest many people. This does not mean that your argumentative essay needs to pander to the popular crowd. It just means that it needs to revolve around a subject that will interest your target audience.
