If you're headed off to college for the first time, you may be understandable nervous about what lies ahead. College is a special time in your life, and one that shouldn't be taken lightly. However, with the right information, you can make your college years some of the easiest and most enjoyable of your life. Take advantage of activities and facilities available on your college's campus. Many campuses offer a variety of free and inexpensive events for students, from concerts to movie showings. They also have fitness centers, pools, and other recreational facilities. You can also join clubs or groups centered around your hobbies, religion, and more. Socialize in moderation. Socialization is an important part of the college experience. Just remember to balance visiting friends and keeping your grades up. It can be easy to lose track of time and procrastinate. Save late night outings for nights when you do not have class the very next day. If you must carry a credit card, make sure you pay the balance monthly. You will never get any penalties or late charges this way. Generally speaking, credit cards should be reserved for emergency situations. While you may be tempted to use it for pleasure, understand that you are in college to learn, not play. Debt can cause you to lose focus. Do you really want to bring your car to another state? Large cities with limited parking might not be the best campuses to count on bringing your car to. It could also be expensive to have a car. Remember that you have to plan for both gas and insurance. During college, there are going to be classes that you realize are too difficult from the onset as you should drop these immediately. These classes can put a lot of stress on you, as you would be better off with an alternative. Also, a different teacher may be able to explain the material better. Most people have heard about the "freshman 15," but you can easily stay away from it if you don't overload on carbs. Try to avoid processed foods and convenience items. Instead, consume as many fresh vegetables and fruit as you can. Also focus on whole grain foods. Both of these choices will help you feel more energized. Protein is important, too, but you need other options. Find out if your college or university has a tutoring center. Most colleges do offer these programs, often run by peer tutors. Seeking help from a fellow student can be a huge help in classes in which you struggle. Come to your sessions armed with specific questions to enable your tutor to make the most of your time. Don't take more than one writing course per term. Even though you may only have to complete 3 essays for the course, there is often a lot of required reading. You want to have enough time to complete the readings for every class, which will be difficult with more than 1 writing course. Attend every class unless you are sick. Unlike when you were in high school, most of the time you are not required to attend all of your classes. However, if you stay home you may miss valuable information or the opportunity to meet other students and get to know your teachers. If you have any textbook's leftover after a semester, decide what to do with them. Your dorm room space is probably precious. Some books are worth keeping for professional use. However, if you do sell, do so privately. You can find a better value for your textbooks if you sell it to an individual instead of selling it online or to your college bookstore. Just make sure to sell soon, as new editions will outdate your texts quickly. When it comes to final exams, plan out the studying schedule weeks in advance so that you are not overwhelmed on that particular week. Studying in advance will help you to soak up the material better, so that you are not trying to cram months of information on a few consecutive nights. Now that you know what's in store for you, you should feel confident about attending college. You will be successful if you work hard and use the tools that are at your disposal. Follow the tips you've just learned, and maybe you will graduate with honors from the school of your choice.
