There is a lot of debate over mentoring vs. coaching lately. For some, the terms mentor and coach have become interchangeable but there truly is a difference. Exploring those differences will give you a better idea of what coaching is and whether getting a coach might be the right move for you in your business. A mentor is usually someone who has many years of experience and who will guide you with tips and techniques that you can use in your own business. Mentors traditionally are not paid, but offer their help out of friendship or volunteer through an agency like the Small Business Administration. Mentors typically offer general advice but leave it up to you to come up with the details and plan to implement the tips. A coach, on the other hand, is paid to show you exactly how to accomplish something - how to be successful at whatever they are coaching you about. When it comes to internet marketing, a coach is someone who will show you step-by-step how to build a successful business using the methods they teach. You can get coaching in article marketing, in traffic generation, in page building, using AdSense, becoming a great affiliate marketer...the list goes on an on. Before you choose a coach to work with you, there are some questions you should be able to answer. The first, of course, will be your budget for coaching. If you can only afford to spend $500 at this time, it would be foolish to even talk to a coach that asks for $2000 for his program. Money should never be your only consideration, naturally, but if that's all you can afford you will need to work within that budget. If you are an absolute novice to building a business online and aren't even sure what direction to go in, you will need a coach who is experienced with working with newcomers and helping them figure out their goals. Coaching from the right person at this critical stage could help you build a strong foundation for a very successful business. If you are not a novice, but perhaps want to learn a particular business model, then a coach with expertise in that particular model can guide you and eliminate the trial and error of going it on your own. After you've found a few coaches that are experts in the area you want to learn, spend some time talking with them before settling on one. This can be done through email or chat programs but it's better if you can actually speak to them on the phone or in person. If the person isn't nearby physically, then a phone conversation would be helpful. You are going to want to see if your personality will mesh well with the coach. You will be spending quite a bit of time working with this person so someone who has a similar outlook on life and business will be much easier to work with.
