“It is always the same with mountains. Once you have lived with them for any length of time, you belong to them. There is no escape.” ? Ruskin Bond, Rain in the Mountains: Notes from the Himalayas.
Life in the mountains is different as can be from life in a city. Perhaps it is because there is beauty all around, but there is less hustle bustle. It isn’t just the tourists, most people can be seen walking by talking to each other, smiling as if at peace. Whereas in cities, most people are too busy in their lives to even look up from their phones. The mountains of Northern India across the Himalayan range are breath-taking in their immense magnificence. Let’s look at some of the best getaways close to Delhi.
Nainital: This beautiful hill station was a favourite among the Europeans when it was ‘discovered’ by the British in the mid-1800s. According to legend the town got its name when the eye of Ma Sati fell down to make the Naini Lake, Naini refers to the eye and Tal is the Hindi word for lake. Home to many famous boarding schools, this town is 6,837 feet above sea level and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Uttarakhand with many beautiful sites to see.
Ladakh: Located at a height of 9,800 feet above sea level, this striking plateau is a province of Jammu and Kashmir. Known for its pristine blue lakes, sand dunes, chilling breeze, wildlife and glaciers the best time to visit is the summers. Owing to the height, all visitors are advised to rest for a day or two in order to acclimatise. The province of Ladakh boasts of having the highest motorable road and the coldest desert in the world. No matter how long your visit to Ladakh lasts, you’ll find yourself wishing for more time.
Manali: Known by some as the ‘valley of the Gods’, Manali is recognised around the world for its natural beauty. Located about 280 km from the capital of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla, this little wonderland is at a height of over 6500 feet above sea level. According to legend, Manali is where the arc of Varvasvata came to rest after the deluge, Varvasvata’s history is similar to the Biblical story of Noah. Manali is also known for adventure sports.
