5 Reasons Why There's No Place Like Chicago |
Posted: September 19, 2017 |
Frank Sinatra puts it beautifully, 'And each time I roam, Chicago is calling me home, Chicago is why I just grin like a clown – It’s my kind of town'. History is the first thing that stands out in Chicago. The city goes back to those times when gangsters ruled and roamed in Cadillac and pitch black Austin 8. I remember reading and falling in love with Chicago when I first read Tintin in America. Usually notable as 'The Windy city', due to two disputable reasons, Chicago is simply unmatched and unbeatable. To prove why Chicago is one of those phenomenal cities, my recent trip to Chicago was so very thrilling, I can't help but take you on a fictional tour.
History of Chicago – The Base of the Present
Chicago was not always the way you see it today. The swamp filled land was unworthy to bear imposing skyscrapers, until people started to move in. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 was seen as an opportunity for the city to reinvent and rebuild itself. What followed was the largest building boom in US history and a skyline beyond beautiful.
Canals, powerhouses and railways started to emerge and the ignored city saw the elevation of trade, commerce and massive settlements. Lake Michigan gave way for foreign tradesmen to cultivate business in the city.
Now coming back to the Windy City, one of the reasons why Chicago got this name was because of the frigid wind blowing from Lake Michigan and fierce wintry season. The second reason was the heated rivalry that boomed between the residents and politicians, tagging them as 'people full of hot air'. Reasons are many, but these never acted as a hindrance for the rapid development of the city's infrastructure, roadways, train network and tourists who took flights to Chicago.
Flying into Chicago was Easy
Chicago was an easy landing for shorter and quicker flights. The O'Hare Airport became a paramount hub for several airlines on a budget. It was like - 2.5 hours to New York, 1.2 hours to Buffalo and approx 3 hours to Salt Lake City. Impressive and perfect, isn't it?
Thrilling Beach Attractions
Who doesn't like being near to a waterbody, especially if it's a beach? The feel is simply awesome. During the summers, bikers take to the biking trails along Lake Michigan. On the other hand, Lakeshore Drive is crammed with people and eye candy, as far as the eye can see. As dusk creeps in over the city, couples enjoy a romantic stroll down Navy Pier or at Chicago River. There's a hustle and bustle at the North Beach over a game of volleyball.
Imposing Architecture
As mentioned before, Chicago was once a muddy clutter. To build something on such a ground, engineers had to actually raise the level. Sidewalks and edifices gradually emerged. From then onwards, some of the most mind-blowing architecture was built, including universities, offices, airports and much more.
Top Architecture in the City
Last, but not the least - People
What will you get if you mix the Texan culture and lifestyle alongwith the clamour of New York? Chicago, it is! The local community does have an edge. A bit of rust-belt blue-collar edge merged with swanky boastful urbanite. Chicagoans are quite friendly and up front, so if you're not used to that, it might shock you. Chicago is a must-visit to actually soak up the American history. Book cheap air fights to Chicago from Crystal Travel US much in advance and explore the amazing city.
