The miracle of eyes is one wonder. Your naked eyes are something like a lens which makes you view things. But there are millions of stars which you haven’t even experienced with your eyes. Didn’t you always wonder how it could be watching all those bright little things above you? This fascination towards star gazing made Hans Lippershey discover how it would be watching them all just with your naked eye and a pair of lens. And that is when the telescope got introduced. The telescope is such a device to view distant objects using refraction of light rays through the lens or the reflection of light rays by a concave mirror. It is a large tubular optical instrument with either lens or mirrors. Telescopes come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and prices. This large number of varied types made a buyer always confused with choices. Before buying that perfect telescope for your star gaze, you must also have these in your mind. How much are you willing to spend? How portable does your telescope need to be? Do you plan to do astrophotography? Why are some telescopes made with mirrors, others with lenses, and few with both combined? Here are few things to be taken care of • You must be careful of department store telescopes which provide for sale to customers with too much power. A 2.4 inch refracting telescope should never use a 120 power magnification. But when you are really in the go for it, you would anyhow want to own a highly possible magnification. In the end, all we gain is an enlarged and hopelessly fuzzy image. • Beware of the mounting of the telescope, as most of them tend to be lightweight and unstable. Most of the telescopes are unable to mount because of a wobbly tripod. A telescope which is the finest can be completely useless if the mount is terribly poor. • Before planning to buy one, you try visiting a local bookstore or a newsstand and browse through various astronomy magazines. Well known and reputed manufacturers such as Losmandy will advertise astronomical telescopes. You can visit planetariums which provide courses on ‘How to use a telescope’. You can also make an effort to contact local astronomical societies and can attend star clubs, parties and other related events where you can have a look at the various telescopes owned by the club members and have a ear at their experiences. • You need not always be sticking to telescopes only. You can use binoculars as well. They are the best device of all to use. A good pair of binoculars can make a very good instrument for a beginner as you need not worry about the power or the mounting. • You must locate a good reputable store that carries a good collection of telescopes and get in touch with a knowledgeable salesperson who can talk you through all the pros of cons of different models. You must insist the salesperson to be allowed to have a look through five or six types in various price ranges.
