The Linksys WRT610N is just one of many models of wireless routers made by Linksys. If you're looking for a good wireless router for multiple devices that need access then this wireless router is for you. If you've got one or more computers, gaming systems and are streaming media to a television then you'll be pleased by the bandwidth performance of this device. With it's two separate broadcasting bands, 2.4GGz and 5GHz respectfully, you'll have more available bandwidth for all your devices. For the casual user/internet surfer this router will be overkill for you since you wouldn't be needing the extra features and should instead look for a lower-priced, yet not low-quality, wireless router. The Linksys WRT610N also comes with it's own software helper, Linksys EasyLink Advisor, which will go step-by-step not only setting up your wireless router and connection but also troubleshooting it if you ever have a problem as it runs in the background. It will alert you of new devices on the network, problems as they arise, security problems and updates and display a wizard to help you deal with whatever happens on with the network.
With it's four ports for wired connections, the dual bands (as mentioned above) and the capability of attaching USB hard drives and flash USB storage this is also a great router for media sharing due to it's built-in media server. The Linksys WRT610N Wireless Router, security wise, supports 128 and 64-but WEP, WPA and WPA2 for connection authentication via the wireless access security code you set. It can transfer up to rates of 270 Mbps when no obstacles are interfering with the signal. The router supports 802.11g, b, a and n. 802.11a is the specific standard that works best with the Xbox 360. So keep that in mind in case you have one and want the best performance connection-wise. Add that with the multiple in, multiple out (MIMO) technology, which increases the data rate and range, you'll also see a decrease in the lack of connectivity in parts of your house. If you have neighbors who also use wireless the Linksys WRT610N will go into "friendly-neighbor" mode and avoid both interfering with and receiving interference on your connection by switching channels and bands. Which will help a lot with the signal quality if you've had trouble with wireless traffic interference from neighbors and such.
Now, as with any technological device, there are bound to be problems and delays. Surprisingly, though, the Linksys WRT610N's are not specifically due to it's internal "bugs" but the limits and or features of current technology itself. First off, if you're replacing a leased router, from your ISP, you'll probably need to tell them the MAC address of your new router or you will be blocked from being able to connect to the internet. You, of course, may also have to update the firmware during the setup process. You may also find that the setting up of the router by logging to router admin panel at 192.168.1.1 may, due to the software, take a while to get through. Also, dependent on the layout of your house and the how far devices are from the router and where they're situated, you may have connectivity problems as with any other wireless routers. But, all-in-all the Linksys WRT610N Dual Band Wireless Router is an excellent choice if you're a power user and require its features.
