If you have your surf fishing rods by your side, make sure that you read the tips below to help you catch fish while you’re at the beach.
1. Use the right tackle
It’s important that you use the right tackle for surf fishing. You can choose between spinning and casting tackle to be your primary for surf fishing. They both have their own pros and cons over the other. When you use spinning tackle, you need to get surf fishing rods that are between 8 to 16 feet in total length. It should be noted that spinning reels are going to be more resistant to corrosion.
A casting tackle is going to be shorter than a spinning tackle. It’s usually 8 to 12 feet but has a more pronounced backbone. This makes them easier to use for those that prefer lightweight tackles. The wide spools usually take advantage of a magnetic casting system. Due to the combination of these, you will find better use for casting tackle for big game fishing including shark.
2. Check the material of your rod
The material of your surf fishing rods should be made of fiberglass. You will get better durability compared to graphite fishing rods. Although both have their own advantages and disadvantages, it’s generally better to use surf rods made of fiberglass or at least a combination of graphite and fiberglass.
3. Look at the time of year
Knowing the seasons will give you a better idea where the fish might be going. Use this to get the advantage by finding out where the flow of the fish leads. Temperatures will also affect where fish go.
4. Make adjustments
Just because you planned for something does not mean that it should be concrete. You should always make adjustments especially when it comes to surf fishing. Always look at the reports and make the necessary modifications to what you bring.
5. Take notes
Before, during and after surf fishing, you should take notes. Look where hollows, gullies, and banks are. Do you see more sand or mud in a particular area? Are there patches of weed visible where you fish?
6. Know how far to cast
It’s important that you know how to gauge where the fish is. Some fish are going to be closer to where you are.
7. Look around
If you are a beginner, you should look where most anglers are. This will give you an idea of where the best hotspots are. Try to ask around for advice as well so you know why they are where they are. The more you are open to ideas and suggestions, the better you are going to be with surf fishing.
8. Baits and lures
Use the appropriate lures for surf fishing such as mullet, sardines, minnows, and other small baitfish.
9. Watch the tides
When it comes to surf fishing, watching the tides is as important as getting your equipment right. Look for the reports and try to find out where the fish go depending on the level of the water.
