People have been parenting for a long time and as a species we've gotten pretty good at it. But nobody is born with the skills and knowledge to raise happy, healthy children; we all have to learn those things. Show physical affection for your child. Human beings naturally crave touch. Whether it's a hug or a kiss or just a simple pat on the head, touch can be a great way to connect with and show affection for your child. Touch is especially important when they're sick or feeling sad, since it will comfort them.
Don't come up with a "one size fits all" idea of discipline. When disciplining your children, realize that they all respond differently to correction. While a time-out might be what one child needs in order to comply, that same method might not work for another. Find what each child responds best to: time-outs, confiscating toys, or extra chores, and then run with that.
When you have a newborn in the house, be sure to split the parenting responsibilities between both Mom and Dad. Splitting up the responsibilities will keep both parents from becoming exhausted, and give each parent a little alone time once in awhile. Maintaining the same mealtime and bedtime rituals makes it easier for children to acclimate to spaces like hotel rooms, which make sleep disturbances less likely!
When you have an infant, it is important that you keep an eye on your child at all times. At this stage in their life they cannot take care of themselves. Without keeping an eye on them they could get away with something that could injure them or possible kill them. For example,they could put something in their mouths and obstruct their esophagus.
