Reddit Starts Redesigning its Interface for the First Time in a Whole Decade |
Posted: July 3, 2018 |
Reddit, one of the most popular social media public forum platforms, has redesigned its website. This marks the first time in a decade that the social media platform has altered its user interface. According to the reports, “ 1 % of Reddit users will be able to see the new design and over the course of the next few months, the design will be implemented across all Reddit.” As of now, those who can view the redesigned version, can still switch back to the old Reddit interface. The newly modified Reddit design has replaced the navigation bar with a menu on the left hand side corner, which is identical with a lot of modern website templates available on Wix, Tumblr or Squarespace. The new menu opens up to display links to feeds, followed subreddits and user account profiles. Users will have the option to view Reddit in three modes which are :
Further Beneficial DevelopmentsTo make things more interesting for new users, different fonts will now differentiate whether a link is heading outside of Reddit or leading onto another post. For content promotion, a big blue button is available on the main page, r/all, which invites users to post something new. These text posts will now open up in boxes to keep the users on the main page so that each new link won’t be taking them away from the page. Besides the redesigned website, Reddit designers have also reimagined Snoo, the Reddit mascot, as a more 3D enhanced cute mascot who is traversing planets instead of just standing still in the logo. New users who have joined Reddit recently, can get Snoo as their default profile photo, until they replace it. Few months ago, CEO of Reddit, Steve Huffman explained in depth about the redesigning, which by then had already been in the developmental works for a year. He posted on the site: “Many of us evangelize Reddit and tell people how awesome it is ... then when those new people decide to check out Reddit for the first time they’re greeted with dystopian Craigslist. We’d like to fix that.” Craigslist’s website is a scrolling list with a lot of white space and Reddit still looks similar to that. Both of these platforms date back to the starting days of the internet landscape when HTML was the primary way to code a web page and embedding a link was considered as achieving something great. However, some Reddit user’s responses hinted that older Redditors might not be big admirers of these changes. In a comment that received a lot of attention and upvotes as well, the user who is a moderator of a subreddit for stocks, responded, “Older users will hate it if they can’t use the old Reddit. It’s a format that sucks at first, but there’s so much room for information. ConclusionSo the reddit users who liked the older version better will be able to keep accessing the old user interface. Reddit stated in an announcement post a few days back that “We do not have plans to do away with the current website. We want to give you more options for how you view Reddit.” While things might seem good , they are quite far from being completed. The new look is not fully released yet and all the current features are not available at the moment. However, the team is working on it, along with some other requested features like keyboard shortcuts and night mode. Other helpful new features are expected to arrive within the very near future. These new features can also supposedly enhance the digital marketing experiences, in the coming days. As we all know, Reddit is a very impactful platform for businesses and bloggers, from the realms of increasing audience engagement, brand building and driving traffic for websites too. So let us sit tight and wait for the entire redesigning to get completed. Watch out this space for more updates.
