When Apple presented its new iPhone models 7 and 7 Plus in autumn 2016, the outcry was great among many users - because the new smartphones do not need a socket for headphones. These can only be connected via Apple's own Lightning interface. Or you can use AirPods: wireless in-ear headphones that are connected to the iPhone by radio. Our quick test shows how the Apple innovation has proven itself in practice.
One size fits all - the AirPods fit most testers well Our five examiners subjected the AirPods to a thorough hearing test and tested their handling and comfort. In the laboratory, we measured the battery runtime and charging time. The AirPods are delivered in a small plastic box with rounded corners, which also serves as a charging station and looks deceptively similar to a dental floss box. Unlike many other in-ear headphone models, the AirPods do not include any additional rubber or plastic pads so that they can be adapted to different ear shapes if necessary. Apple's motto is obvious as always: One size fits all. In fact, the AirPods seem to fit well in quite a few ears: Three out of five testers found the seat to be good and safe over the long term. Even with strong and fast head movements, the capsules did not fall out of their ears. However, before buying it is definitely advisable to try out whether the AirPods are compatible with your own ear shape. If the AirPods do not fit properly, they cannot be adjusted - and subsequently push or even fall out, as was also shown in our test.
Easy coupling between iPhone and AirPods Coupling the AirPods to an iPhone works very easily. When starting up for the first time, it is sufficient to place the iPhone (or another Bluetooth-capable device with iOS operating system) at a short distance next to the earphone capsule and open the Bluetooth menu under the Settings menu item. Then the iPhone automatically starts a search and finds the AirPods immediately: Confirm the pairing on the display with a tap of your finger, and the AirPods are ready for use. But smartphones with the Android operating system can also be quickly and easily connected to the AirPods via the Bluetooth menu.
Operation via iPhone or Siri speech recognition software There are no controls on the AirPods themselves, all functions are controlled via the iPhone or via the Siri speech recognition software: in addition to the Bluetooth chip and a battery, small microphones are built into the earphone capsules, each weighing only four grams, so that all functions can also be selected using voice commands can be controlled. Tap the earbud twice with your finger and Siri is activated. In addition to listening to music, the AirPods can also be used as a headset for making calls thanks to the built-in microphones. Other apps - for example for navigating - can also be operated via Siri. Provided there is a connection to the Internet: Siri always needs it to function.
Didn't sound spectacular Most testers rated the sound like less than spectacular. The testers lacked the highs, and many felt the bass reproduction was too strong. They rated the voice reproduction as somewhat quirky. creative wp 350 reviews , on the other hand, was not an issue due to the system: These are mainly caused by the connection cable, which rubs on clothing or the neck, or by rubber or foam pads that squeak in the ear.
A little better than competitor Bragi The Dash Compared to the Bragi The Dash earphone capsules, which work with a similar concept, the AirPods performed a little better in terms of sound. Practical: thanks to a sensor, the AirPods only switch on when the user puts an earphone in their ear. And: The music stops when the user takes out one of the two earphones, for example, to answer a phone call.
The AirPods are powered by a battery that is built into the earphone capsule. Almost six hours of listening pleasure are possible with one battery charge. If the AirPods are empty, they can be fully recharged within half an hour in the plastic box supplied - Apple calls it Case. The case is charged via a Lightning connector from a device with a USB charging socket or a standard USB power supply. A small battery is integrated into the charging case, so that with a fully charged charging case, the AirPods can be charged up to five times before the case itself has to be recharged.
AirPods unload charging case during extended storage If the earphones are placed in the charging case for storage, they are constantly recharged there; In other words: you are constantly drawing electricity. If the earphones are not used for a long period of time, they should not be kept in the charging case so that they do not discharge as quickly. Background: Batteries should generally not be left empty for a long period of time, as their capacity and service life suffer.
Conclusion: The sound could be better for 180 euros The AirPods are an original and practical accessory for iOS devices. However, their sound is not spectacular. Especially for this price: 180 euros should also be too much for some die-hard Apple fans. You can find better and cheaper devices in our test sports headphones. If you not only want to listen to music while jogging, but also measure your pulse, you can try headphones with pulse measurement. And for those who love the classic: We also tested on-ear and circumaural headphones - Bluetooth headphones in the test.
