For anglers -- especially the novices -- the winter season can be such a tough time. There are those who choose to brave through the cold and still fish, but there are also those who turn their attention to other stuff and go back to the waters when the fishing season returns. If you belong to the latter, you must know that there’s a proper way of storing your fishing gears, including your all-time favorite Seigler reels.
Many fishermen simply hide their tackles and carelessly store them away. The consequence? Once it’s time to go fishing again, their gears won’t give out the same level of performance as they did before winter came. If you don’t want this to happen to you, check out the easy-to-follow tips we’ve compiled for you.
Rods
Inspect your fishing rods for any corrosion and apply light oil to the rods’ metal parts. You also need to keep an eye for possible cracks along rod guides that can cut line. Before storing them away, you can give further protection by applying a light coat of wax. You can also use rod sleeves before putting them into a rack.
Reels
For long-term storage, reels like Seigler reels should be prepared properly to avoid any damage.
Strip off the old line and have it serviced professionally. If you want to have it DIY-style, remove the spool and clean the shaft meticulously and make sure all salt deposits and debris are removed. Lubricate the shaft using the manufacturer-recommended reel oil. You also need to oil the bail arm and the roller. Replace the spool and keep it in a dry place.
Lures
If you have lures that are already rusting and severely damaged by corrosion, they need to be replaced before keeping them during the winter season. Also, inspect if there’s any damage in the split rings. To avoid corrosion, you can also coat metal hooks and lures with the proper wax advised by your manufacturer.
Line
Like Seigler reels, lines should also be kept in a dry place. Just a word for fly fishermen though -- another thing to keep in mind is to remove the fly line before storing them. The lines must also be cleaned with soap-and-water solution. They must be stored in large loops and be labeled accordingly.
Net
Before putting them away for winter, examine if your nets are in good condition. Inspect for any hole in the mesh, have it replaced if there’s any. The metal parts should also be cleaned and coated.
Boat
If there’s a place where you can store your boat inside, do so. But if none, make sure that it can withstand the upcoming harsh weather. Store your boat with a full tank of gas with no methanol. The motor should be lowered as well, so it doesn’t collect any water in it.
Bear in mind that all equipment are taken out of the boat, and all electronics inside it are disconnected. When parking it outside, make sure to raise the front. Wash and wax it before putting a cover.
