The TrackThe Tongariro Alpine Crossing track ventures between Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngauruhoe in the Tongariro National Park. These volcanos are still active and the hike is a view into their growth and destruction. Please don't attempt the crossing without a guide. Late May's weather is very changeable. Your daylight hours are short and you don't want to be caught out ill-prepared. New Zealand’s oldest national park, Tongariro National Park is a dual World Heritage area. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is heralded as the best one-day trek available in New Zealand, while others say it's among the top ten single-day treks in the world. Regarding Booking a shuttle! Mt Tongariro last erupted from Te Maari Crater in 2012 and Mt Ngauruhoe’s last was in 1975. There is now a 4 hour parking restriction in place at Mangatepopo road end to allow for those doing shorter walks. As from 30th April the restriction to leaving you car for the day at Mangatepopo (the Start) has been lifted. I have posted this to people already this time of year I would not recommend to leaving you car at the end and taking a shuttle to the start!
