Your Social Security card number is one of the most important representations of your identity. It is the number that you must provide when you are applying for a job, or even trying to get a mortgage. In many cases, you will have your Social Security card with you, but there are times when we may accidentally lose it. When we misplace this card, we can submit forms online that will allow us to get a new one. Follow the simple steps to get a replacement Social Security card on the web in the next few weeks. What Websites Should You Visit? The website that you need to visit is the main government Social Security website. Once you are there, they will provide you with instructions. If your card has been lost, or even if it has been stolen, you will follow the same exact steps. A prerequisite to obtaining a new one is that you must be a US citizen. You must also be 18 years of age or older. You need to have a United States mailing address. And finally, you must have a driver's license or some type of state issued identification card. Once you are there, you will then find out what documents you will need to go through the process. For example, if you are an adult, and this was your original card that you lost, you will click on the link that will take you to the Social Security card replacement request page. The Application For Getting A New Social Security Card On the official website, you will go to the forms area. You will be filling out what is called S 5. This is a form that you will fill out after printing it. You then need to complete and sign the application. They specifically request that you only use blue or black ink. Additionally, when you print the form out, it must be standard 8.5"x 11" paper. The form is a single page, making it possible for most people to fill it out within the span of just a few minutes. Once you are done, you can mail this into the Social Security department, or you can turn it in at a local Social Security office near you. It will take a couple weeks for them to process this. However, there are reasons why it might take a little bit longer. Why Would It Take Longer To Receive Your Social Security Card? There are multiple reasons why there could be a delay in sending you a replacement card. Most of these reasons have to do with changes that you would like to make. For example, if you have recently changed your name at around the time that your card was stolen, they will have to verify that this is you before the card will be issued. If you have changed your physical address, or your mailing address, this also needs to be verified. They want to make sure that this is you requesting the card. Finally, if you are getting a replacement card as a result of dealing with identity theft, you will probably be requesting a new Social Security number which could take several additional weeks for it to be issued. Once you are ready to fill out this form and submit your request, you will need to go to the Social Security Administration website and download this form. It is actually very easy to do, a short form that almost anyone can fill out on their own. However, if you perceive that you will have problems, you can always go to the local office and they can help you out. What Is On The Form That You Will Fill Out? The form is fairly straightforward. They are going to ask for your full name. They will also ask what your Social Security number is. You need to tell them where your place of birth was, and the date of your birth. You need to check the box that states you are a US citizen. There is another box labeled that Ethnicity that is specifically asking if you are Hispanic or Latino. This box, and your desire to answer the question, is completely optional. Likewise, another optional box is called Race. This is where you can specify what race you come from. For example, if you are white, you would check that box. If you are African-American, native Hawaiian, or if you are an American Indian, you can check that box if you want to. Next, you need to define whether you are male or female. You also need to provide the names and Social Security numbers for your mother and father. Finally, you need to state whether or not this is your first request for a new card. You need to put the name that was on the Social Security card that is now missing. If you used a different date of birth on the prior card, that also needs to be written down. You will put today's date, your phone number, mailing address, and you will sign the document at the bottom. At the very bottom of the form you will not do anything. That is for official use only. Once completed, which should take you just a few minutes if you have all of this information ready, you can send it in or take it to a Social Security office. If you have completed the form correctly, and you have sent this in promptly, you should get a new card issued within the next few weeks. It really is that easy to get a replacement for your was lost or stolen card. As long as you are not changing any of the information that was on that card, there should be no delay in processing your request. Keep in mind that the amount of time it will take can vary depending upon the time of the year and how many requests are coming in. Other than that, you will be ready to open up a letter from the United States Social Security Administration office with your new Social Security card in the up-and-coming weeks.
