You’ve already bought a toilet; now let’s breakdown exactly how to install your new best flushing toilet in your home. I am going to give you a simple and painless DIY process that will leave you with awesome results. Tools and Materials
Step 1: Disconnect Toilet Water Supply Turn off your water supply at the shutoff valve. Remove all the water from your old toilet’s water tank. Plunge the water in the toilet bowl through the drain. Step 2: Remove Your Old Toilet Removing your old toilet is easy. Set the trim cups at the toilet’s base. Then loosen the nuts and washers that are securing the toilet to the floor and remove them. Cut the nuts with your hacksaw if they are rusted. Rock the toilet back and forth. Be gentle. And then lift the toilet out once it is loose enough. This should reveal an open line to your main drain/ sewer system. Seal the hole with a rag to keep odors off the air. Note: If you have a two piece toilet you should remove the tank first before removing the bowl. However for a one piece toilet, calling a pal to help would very commendable. One piece toilets are very heavy. Step 3: Apply New Wax on Flange At the edge of the drain is a flange. The flange connects the main toilet to the drain. To seal the two together, wax is often used. Remove old wax from the flange using a putty knife. Inspect the flange for any cracks. If it is intact; remove the rag, take off the cut closet bolts, and apply new wax before hooking new bolts into the flange. Step 4: Assemble Your New Toilet Attach your toilet tank to the bowl. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions (follow the user manual). Slide the tanks bolts through the right holes at the bottom of the tank. Make sure the shanks of your bolts are aligned with the holes in your toilets bowl (two piece toilets). Tighten the screws to secure the tank to the bowl. Step 5: Secure Your Toilet to Flange Remove all the rags that sealed the drain line. Then set your assembled toilet on top of the flange. Align the bolts from the flange with the shanks on the toilets base. Press the toilet on the flange to get a good seal on new wax ring. Step 6: Give Installation Smooth Finish Secure your toilet with the washers. Use adjustable wrench to tighten them. Don’t use so much force – you could crack the toilet. Cut off any bolts that extend too far above the toilet using your hacksaw. Cover the trimmed ends using trim caps. Then reconnect your water supply to the toilet.
