Dark circles are a problem that many people encounter in their lifetime. It can affect anybody but particularly the elderly are more prone to it. The most common reason for dark circles under the eyes is attributed to fatigue. Sleeping a lot or being overly tired or taking time to sleep can cause dark circles.
When you are deprived of sleep the blood vessels below the eye start to show because the skin below the eyes is the thinnest in the body. Sleep deprivation can also cause fluids to build up below the eye and you can have puffy eyes and dark circles. As you age the skin keeps getting thinner and the dark vessels show below your skin. Eye strain and allergies are other factors that cause dark circles. There are many ways to treat dark circles under your eyes and some of them are given below:
- The first thing that most of us do when we see dark circles is to get the makeup kit and apply makeup. By applying makeup we aim to minimize the discoloration. There are many dark circle removers too in the market which you can buy and apply but make sure they are healthy skin care products and are not made with unhealthy chemicals.
- Not getting proper sleep is one of the reasons for dark circles. It is imperative to sleep at least 7-8 hours every day and if you do so you will find that there are no dark circles. Sleeping a lot can cause dark circles so do not over sleep. Since fluids can collect in the eyelids and cause dark circles you should keep your head elevated while you sleep. By keeping the head elevated you ensure the fluids will not stay in the face and the result - you will look great when you get up in the morning.
- To minimize the swelling under the eyes, you can use cold compresses. A cold compress will not just reduce the swelling it will also compress the blood vessels and you will find the dark circles lightening considerably.
- Good old cucumber has been used for centuries to reduce dark circles. Researchers haven’t found out how exactly it works but it has been working and there are people who swear by it. Some people use cold tea bags which also help in reducing swelling and dark circles. Another option is to use caffeinated teabags because caffeine is known to help blood circulation and this will make your face bright too.
- Avoiding the sun can also help a person reduce dark circles. The ultraviolet radiation can increase the dark circles under your eyes. Ideally you should apply a SPF 30 sunscreen lotion or cream on your face before you go out in the sun. You should also cover your eyes with good quality sunglasses. Hats and caps can also help you when you go out in the sun. Even with these precautions, it is better to go out in the sun only when you have to.
