The health of a mother and baby during pregnancy is of the utmost importance, and the number of vitamins and nutrients that every mother gets is different depending on their situation and health. However, every mother should be trying to take these vitamins, either in their traditional diet or in a multivitamin, in order to ensure the baby is as healthy as possible. Vitamin D and Folic Acid Vitamin D is something that should be taken for all nine months, as it strengthens the baby’s bones. It can be received from some foods such as salmon as well as normal time in the sunlight. Folic acid helps with the baby’s nervous system and ensures that it develops correctly and isn’t deformed. These vitamins can be found in tablets and foods, and need to be taken regularly. Iron Being pregnant can cause low iron in the mother’s bloodstream, and having low iron can cause birth defects such as the baby being underweight and premature birth. Red meat and green vegetables contain large amounts of iron, and having those as staples in a pregnancy diet is a must to keep the iron stores full and the baby risk-free. Vitamin C Vitamin C helps form collagen in blood vessels, and since a lot of blood is being pumped during pregnancy, a lot of vitamin C is needed. Oranges are the most well-known source, but other fruits and vegetables also process varying levels of Vitamin C. Since most mothers will be eating a lot of fruits and vegetables during the pregnancy, this shouldn’t be an issue. Calcium Calcium is another substance that affects a baby’s bones and health, and it can be obtained from anywhere. Dairy is the most well-known, but breads, dried fruits, almonds, and vegetables have some as well. Mothers will need a lot of it, so don’t skimp on the dairy! Lots of Fluids Fluids help keep the body loose and can prevent bowel problems, and they can also provide other benefits for both moms and babies. So, drink plenty of vegetable juice and water while staying away from anything alcoholic. Taking in several glasses of water per day will be enough to keep everything going. All of these nutrients should be readily taken through food, but doctor prescribed vitamins and supplements containing them can also be taken if the mother has a deficiency in any of them.
