Keep an open mind as you check out your potty choices - potty seats and potty chairs. Make sure the potty seat or potty chair you pick fits your child’s size. Your little one’s potty training progress will depend on how well the potty fits their size. Examine the nitty-gritty: check out potty seats and potty chairs for basic practicalities such as stability and ease of cleaning. Also make sure the potty seat or potty chair you choose doesn’t easily slide around. Picking the right potty You have 2 different styles to choose from: a potty seat (adapter seat) that’s attached to a regular toilet or a standalone potty chair that sits on the ground. Consider your toddler’s preferences while you take the decision on which potty to pick. If your child likes the potty, they will feel more like it’s their own. When to choose the potty seat If your little one wants to be a ‘big kid’ by using the big toilet, she is already motivated. So a potty seat that hooks onto the regular toilet is the ideal choice for your child. Also, get a small step stool to help your kid plant their feet firmly on a base (and push) for better bowel movements. Get a potty seat that won’t drive the rest of the family nuts - it should be easily removable when adults want to use the toilet. When to choose the potty chair If your child is an individualist, then a potty chair works best for them. The kid who is fond of the "mine" word will relate more to a potty chair than to a regular toilet. It gives them their own private little pee-pot. Your child will not need your help to use the potty chair, as they may with the potty seat (to get on the big toilet). The one drawback with potty chair is you need to clean out the bowl and that gets old. You want to do everything you can to help your toddler succeed in potty training. Picking the right potty is the first step in the journey.
