How to Teach Your Kids to Extend the Life of Their GlassesIf your child needs to wear glasses, this can be a great opportunity to teach them about responsibility. Now, they will have to wear and care for their glasses. Since the cost of eye exams, glasses and care systems can add up--they have to learn that they will need to prolong the use of their glasses until they grow out of them. It is not feasible to buy a new pair of glasses every week. So, your job is to get them excited about caring for their new pair of eyeglasses. In this area, it is important you remain patient and consistent in teaching them about how to properly care for their glasses. Get Them InvolvedYour child will feel more excited to take care of their glasses if they like them. This is why it is important to have them pick out frames they like best, within your budget. If your child picks pink frames, and you hate pink, just remember that these are not your glasses. You won't have to wear them, and you want your kid to enjoy wearing their kid-friendly glasses. If they pick out expensive glasses that aren't in your budget, look for a similar, more cost-effective option. The same is true of their eyeglass case. Let them pick out the one they prefer, and they will be more inclined to use them. It might be something they consider cool that none of their friends have. There are so many options to choose from, they might even have trouble deciding. Yet, now, they have something that belongs to them. And, if they like their glasses and case, they will feel more interest and motivation in caring for them. Teach Them Proper CareChildren may look at glasses as if they were a toy and share them with friends at school or try to contort them into positions that are apt to cause breakage. This is why you must teach your child proper care from the minute they get their glasses. For starters, they should only clean their glasses while they are wet. Run them under warm water. If you rub dirt off while the glasses are dry, it could leave scratches. In addition, it is better to take off or put on glasses with two hands. This decreases the amount of fingerprints on the lenses and prevents them from getting bent. Another tip is to use a special cloth to clean the lenses. Don't let your child get into the habit of cleaning their lenses with their shirts as this can cause more damage. Instead, use a soft cloth made specifically for cleaning lenses. Show Them How Fun It IsUse games and creativity to help them enjoy caring for their lenses. If they like superheroes, you might show them how Superman wears glasses and he has superpowers--the same is true of superwoman. Pretend that the glasses give them super powers, and they must wear them to work. You can also use a reward system. Create a chart and post it on the refrigerator. Discuss and agree upon the terms. If they take care of their glasses seven days in a row, you might take them to watch a movie. Play the game for at least a month since it takes around three weeks to get accustomed to new habits. Final ThoughtCaring for glasses is just as important as wearing them. Make it fun, and your kids will enjoy it.
