Home Decor Tips for the novice decorator |

I remember when I first started out decorating our first home, it was a daunting experience. Not only was it a challenge to figure out what style and look I wanted but to make sure every room in the house looked cohesive. And then even when I finally decided what I wanted, it was a whole other challenging finding reasonably priced items to fit that look. I’ve gather here a few random thoughts and tips that could help with anything just starting out and want to decorate on their own without hiring an expensive professional. Everyone inevitably ends up with a hand me down sofa, or something that was a first apartment purchase that you’re not quite ready to part with but need to decorate around it to make it look like it was more of an adult living room or family room. My problem was a bunch of brown leather furniture. So I was looking for living room color scheme with brown leather furniture. I eventually ended up with a neutral natural color scheme that suited the brown leather couch. In hindsight, I realized this style category could be summarized as modern industrial farmhouse decor. A little bit of leather, raw unfinished woods, and a dark metallic accent. The end look was a little bit more masculine than I preferred but it was perfect for my husband and his man cave. What was really great about decorating around this old leather couch was because of the style, the worn effect on the leather fit in perfectly with the rustic feel of the space. Another problem I had was figuring out how to fill the larger living room space. Prior to this first real home, I had lived in smaller living room apartments and didn’t really have this problem. Now I had a much more open space and had to pick out an arrangement of furniture and decor that filled up the space. I particularly struggled to find a good rug. It is amazingly difficult to find inexpensive extra large area rugs. I ended up going with a thinner rug and buying a plush rug pad so it had a more luxurious feel. It was a much more challenging experience decorating the dining room though. There’s not a lot of good dining room ideas that would be a good fit for a family with young children. I particularly wanted upholstered chairs that were stylish and easy to clean. I also wanted a dining table that could fit a lot of people and could take a beating without looking too worn. I ended up going with a more modern dining table because the table legs optimized for the most seating with clunky high chairs and it looked more streamlined. I went with a synthetic suede material that could be easily wiped with a cold towel. The easiest room was probably the bedroom. But even then, shopping for bedding that wasn’t too feminine but also not boring was harder than I thought it would be. I ended up nice rustic neutral sheets because it was neutral but not boring.
