One of the best things you can do with your old textbooks is to sell them online so that you can create space for the other books that you need to buy the coming semester. It is also a great way to get some cash that you can put back into your current book budget. In order to sell a book back though, you need to classify its condition since the money you get for it will be partly based on the condition that the book is in.
- Soft Cover Books – Books with soft covers are usually termed as paperbacks. There are five different categories that your book can fall into as follows:
- New – This is a book that you may have bought and never read or never used. It should not have any flaws.
- Like new – This is a book that does not have flaws that are noticeable but may have minor indications that you read it one time.
- Very good – This is a book that you have used but it is still in a condition that can be termed excellent. You should not have taken notes in the margins, highlighted, or made marks of any kind. Pages should also not be missing; there should be no tears, fading or scratches either.
- Good – A book in good condition should be a clean copy with all the pages intact. It may have some signs of use such as on the spine, and may have some highlighting or notes in it.
- Acceptable – This is a book that has considerable notes in it, or considerable highlighting. The text should be legible and the book intact.
When you sell textbooks online, they will most likely fall in the good or acceptable category.
2) Hardback – Most college textbooks fall in the hardcover category. The grading system will usually be as follows:
- New – The dust jacket and the book itself should look like it has just come from the publishers.
- Fine – Both dust jacket and book do not have any defects or flaws that can be noticed
- Very good – This is a book that you have used but is not torn and only has minor signs of wear.
- Good – This is a book that has been averagely used. Must have all its pages intact with minor flaws.
- Fair – This book may have all its text pages in place but may miss end papers or the title page, etc. It may have some defects and a worn dust jacket and binding.
- Poor – This is a book that shows considerable wear. If the book’s text is not obscured and is complete, it may be sold. Such a book may be scuffed, soiled, have the spine separated from the book, etc.
- Ex-Library – This is a book that formerly belonged to a library. Regardless of the condition that the book is in, this must always be disclosed to the buyer.
- Binding Copy – This is a book with pages intact but the binding may be detached or loose.
