Are Condoms Really Necessary for the prevention of SIDs? |

Many people do not want to use a condom during sex because they think it will kill the mood. Actually condoms are one of the most effective ways to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The STDs, such as HIV and syphilis can cause serious damage or even death.
Condoms are the most widely recommended method for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections. In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it would use the term “condomless sex” to recognize that people could engage in condom-free sex, but still protect themselves from HIV by using Truvada which is the first drug approved by the FDA to prevent HIV.
Condoms are most effective way in reducing infection rates in both men and women when used correctly. Even if not used perfectly, the condoms can also be effective at reducing the transmission of some virus and bacteria that cause STIs such as AID, ssyphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea. According to the report by World Health Organization, using latex condoms can reduce the risk of HIV or AIDS transmission by 80 to 95%, and the infection rate is 0.9 per 100 person-years with condoms during sex.
However, some disease transmission may occur even with a condom when the infectious area is around the genitals which may not be covered by a condom. Diseases like HPV and herpes may be transmitted by direct contact.
In conclusion, it is true that medicines like PREP and Truvada can reduce the risk of HIV, but it cannot protect you from other STDs. So condoms are really necessary for the prevention of SIDs.
