An AWS certification test could be any welding test that is performed to American Welding Society standards. But the term is often used to refer to a certification test that is either performed at an American Welding Society accredited welding test facility, or administered on the job site by an approved qualifier of the test facility. Here is how it works: First of all, a welding qualification test shop receives accreditation by the American Welding Society by complying with a bunch of policies that can be found in The B5.4 Specification for the qualification of Welder Test Facilities...and also QC4 , Standard for Accreditation of Test Facilities. These documents contain a whole bunch of hoops that test shops are required to jump through in order to become accredited test facilities. Employers that choose to do so, can accept the certification without testing the welders themselves. That has the potential to save time and money. Are employers actually accepting the American Welding Society certification without testing the welders? Some are. But others are not ready to accept the full responsibility of the welders performance without seeing for themselves what a welder can do. In addition, some states like Washington and California have their own hoops for welders to jump through regardless of whether a welder certified at an accredited AWS weld test facility.
