5 Quick Tips for Eating Well in Your Motorhome |

Travelling in a motorhome is an exciting experience. You choose where you want to go, what you want to see and how long you want to stay. You also enjoy the great outdoors and get closer to nature, spending quality time with your loved ones. Motorhome trips are best when they are well-planned, and one factor to consider is what you eat. Where will you eat? What will you choose to cook? And where will you cook it? Here are a few cooking and healthy eating tips for living the life in Hymer motorhomes and campervans. 1. Consider Movement and Weight As you take the corners in your motorhome, everything inside will move around too if it’s not fixed in place. Store food in lidded containers and place them where they won’t slide off a shelf and spill while you’re driving. It helps if cupboards are full or completely empty when you are driving, or you can use cords to secure loose items. Don’t take any food containers that can break, such as glass jars, and minimise weight by bringing plastic cups and plates. 2. Plan Your Packing Many people like to take enough food to last the trip, particularly if it is a short holiday, since this removes the inconvenience of having to go shopping. If you take perishable food like meat, plan to eat this first and then move onto your stock of non-perishable goods like canned tuna, baked beans and pasta or whatever food items you prefer. You can normally pick up bread and milk from any campsite shop, so you can save space by only bringing enough for the first few days. 3. Cook for Speed You probably don’t want to spend hours slaving over your motorhome stove, particularly since space is more limited in a van than in your kitchen at home. Choose dishes and meals designed for speed and practicality. For example, boiling pasta is reasonably quick but making cous cous is even quicker. Many people bring ready-chopped vegetables for pasta sauces or pre-made meals that can be heated up on the stove or in the microwave, if you have one installed. 4. Take Essential Equipment Minimise clutter and chaos in the motorhome kitchen by taking a few well-chosen pieces of kitchen equipment and leaving the rest at home. You’ll need a sharp cook’s knife, a can opener and a decent non-stick frying pan for a start. A larger pan for boiling water for pasta is also essential. 5. Embrace the BBQ Lifestyle Cooking outside on a barbeque keeps the inside of the van cooler and free from cooking smells, and you also enjoy delicious meals that you may not normally make at home. For safety, use a meat thermometer to check your burgers and chicken are cooked all the way through. Use the grill to cook other things besides meat. You can grill plenty of vegetables on the barbeque as well as fruit like bananas for dessert.
