Taking photos of statues and sculptures can’t really be compared to taking photos of people. There are angles and many other factors that you have to take into consideration when doing so. When you take photos of bronze sculptures, you need to highlight the features that you wouldn’t when the subject is a live person. Below are 9 tips to help you shoot beautiful photos of bronze statues and sculptures.
1. Location
Are you taking the photo indoors or outdoors? If you’re indoors, take advantage of the artificial light. If you’re outdoors, use the time of day to your advantage. Keeping both in mind will help you tremendously in shooting beautiful photos of bronze statues and sculptures.
2. Background
There are a lot of distractions that you have to keep an eye out for. Try to avoid getting stop signs, messy foliage, and other possible eyesores from the frame of the shot. Ensure that the statue or sculpture is featured.
3. Detail
Focus on one particular detail that you want to highlight from the statues and sculptures that you’re shooting. Do you want to showcase the edges that look realistic? Are you trying to feature how well the subject blends in with the surroundings?
4. Angles
If you are having a tough time finding good angles, try to shoot the photo on a different day. If you still don’t get one, why not move your hips or your feet so you are in a different stance for a different perspective?
5. Tripod
A tripod will help you stabilize your camera. Although it is enticing to be that photographer who goes around, camera in hand, taking shots of bronze statues and sculptures, having a tripod will help you land more beautiful shots. Bring one that you won’t exhaust you carrying around.
6. Nature
Nature can sometimes make or break a photograph. If including the surrounding nature in the shot doesn’t really add to it, then it’s probably better to simply feature the bronze statue or sculpture and nothing else with it in the shot to not take away from the art.
7. People
Having a tough time taking a photo of a popular bronze sculpture or statue due to the number of people trying to do the same as you? Take multiple shots within the hour and use software to remove the details that aren’t consistently in the shot for a digitally modified empty foreground.
8. History
Most bronze sculptures and bronze statues that have been installed decades prior have a history with them. Why are they looking up? Why are they pointing in a specific direction? Tell a story with the photographs you’re taking to give it historical context.
9. Colors
The color can be indirectly manipulated by factors that may be outside of your control. This is why it’s better to give yourself several days to get the shot that you want because there’s no doubt that you’re going to get it right the first go around if you’re a perfectionist.
